Yamuna River Water Levels Rise Significantly

On Wednesday, the Yamuna River's water level exceeded 207 metres at the Old Railway Bridge (ORB). At 6:00 AM on September 4, 2025, the recorded level was 207.48 metres. The Hathni Kund Barrage reported a discharge of 148,443 cusecs, while the Wazirabad Barrage indicated a discharge of 193,090 cusecs. The Okhla Barrage showed an even higher discharge of 235,550 cusecs, reflecting a substantial flow of water through the river.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

The rising waters of the Yamuna have reached the main road at the Monastery Market's entrance. In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has arrived and is preparing for rescue operations. NDRF teams have been deployed in various areas including Akshardham, Mayur Vihar, Yamuna Bazaar, and the ISBT region. The water has now reached ISBT Kashmiri Gate, prompting the closure of the road from ISBT to Tis Hazari. Reports indicate that over 700 individuals have been evacuated due to the flood alert.

Impact on Cremation Services

The rising water levels are causing significant disruptions in Delhi, with the Yamuna now flooding the Nigam Bodh Ghat, affecting cremation services. This site, located along the Ring Road behind the Red Fort, is the oldest and busiest cremation ground in the city, featuring 42 platforms and handling an average of 55 to 60 cremations daily. During the floods in 2023, the site was closed for nearly a week due to water intrusion.
